Hike in an impressive nature reserve with magnificent views of Johannesburg from the hills and a healthy population of game
With over 250 animals, the likelihood of seeing wildlife is reasonably high. The reserve has a rich history related to the second Boer War of 1899-1902 as a major part of the battle for Johannesburg was fought in and around the reserve in 1900.
The reserve has 10 short linear color-coded trails which we walked to design a hike for this guidebook. Shorter and less demanding circular trails are available to avoid the hills which can be challenging. As stated by the reserve’s website: “A three-hour hike along the flatter areas can be completed by most people who can manage three hours of shopping.”
